What is usually going on

A read receipt tells you they opened it, not that they decided anything. People open messages on the bus, in a meeting or half asleep and mean to come back to them. The question is what your message asked of them. If it needed an answer (a plan, a question), a light follow-up after a fair gap is normal. If it was a statement, silence may just mean there was nothing to say. Context matters too. A friend who always replies slowly is different from a new match who was chatty yesterday. One follow-up is fine. A second in a row with no reply changes the balance. At that point the silence is the answer. Be honest about what you want from the follow-up. If it is the plan, ask about the plan. If it is reassurance that they still like you, no text can deliver that. The best follow-ups carry something new: a deadline, a link, a fresh question. The worst ask them to explain the silence. It is also worth rereading your own message. A long paragraph or three questions at once is harder to answer than one clear line. People put off hard replies.

Nudge without sounding needy

No rush on this, just checking you saw it.

Also, still up for Saturday?

Ignore me if you’re swamped. Let me know about Friday when you can.

Short and easy to answer in one word. It assumes they are busy, not avoiding you.

Saw this and immediately thought of you 😂

Random one but did you ever try that taco place you mentioned?

A fresh topic is easier to answer than an old question they already skipped.

Let it go gracefully

No worries if not, have a good week.

All good, catch you another time.

Send this only if you mean it. It closes the loop so you can stop checking your phone.

What not to send

  • “??” It reads as impatience even if you meant it lightly.
  • “I can see you’ve read it.” It makes them defend their read receipts instead of answering.
  • A second follow-up before they have answered the first. Two unanswered messages is a pattern.
  • “Guess you’re busy then.” It is a sulk. A sulk is harder to reply to than the original message.
  • A screenshot of your own unanswered message. It turns a slow reply into an accusation.

They said: ok you have to tell me the best thing you ate in lisbon

You said: easy, the custard tarts from the place by the tram stop. what about you, ever been?

Read the room

They were chatty yesterday and have now read your message without replying. Most likely life got in the way. One fresh message is fine. A repeat of the question is not.

Also I’ve just found out there’s a place doing them here. Dangerous information.

Move it towards a plan

Ok this needs settling over an actual tart. You free this week?

Questions

How long should I wait after being left on read?

For a friend, a day or two. For a dating match, about a day. For work, two or three working days. Shorten it if there is a real deadline, like a plan tonight.

Is it rude to leave someone on read?

Usually it is just life. Most people read and mean to reply later. Some open every message straight away to clear the notification and reply in batches in the evening. It becomes rude when it is a pattern with things that clearly needed an answer.

What if a match leaves me on read?

Send one new, light message after a day. If that is read and ignored too, move on. A match who wants to talk will talk. Chasing past that point rarely changes the outcome. If they reappear a week later with an apology, you can decide then whether you are still interested.

Should I double text?

Once, yes. A double text with something new to say is normal. Repeating the same question or adding a third message is where it starts to read as pressure. If the second message gets no reply either, stop. The next move is theirs.
