What is usually going on

Ex messages come in a few types and each wants a different reply. A birthday message or a practical one (a parcel, news about a mutual friend) is usually just that. A “hey” or “how are you” after a long gap is often loneliness or curiosity rather than a plan. A late-night message is a late-night message. Before replying, decide what you want rather than guessing what they want. If you would like them back, a warm reply is fine. Match their effort rather than exceeding it. If you are over it, a short friendly reply is kinder than silence and closes it naturally. If you are in no contact for your own sake, you do not owe a reply at all. Timing tells you something too. A message on a birthday or an anniversary is often sentiment more than intent. A message just after their own break-up is often about filling a gap. Neither is sinister. It just helps to know which one you are answering. And you can take your time. Nobody needs an instant reply from an ex.

Replies by what you want to happen

Keep it friendly and short

Thanks, that’s kind of you. Hope you’re well too.

Hey, all good here thanks. Hope things are going well for you.

Polite and complete, with no question at the end. It does not invite a thread.

Open the door a little

Hey, good to hear from you. How’ve you been?

Ha, that’s a surprise. What made you think of me?

A question keeps it going. Write about as much as they did and no more.

Keep the distance you need

Hey. I’m keeping some space for now, so I’m going to leave this here. Take care.

Thanks for the message. I’d rather not be in touch right now. I hope you understand.

Clear and kind. You do not need to explain beyond that.

What not to send

  • A reply at 2am to their 2am message. Late replies to late messages set the tone for what this becomes.
  • A long catch-up on everything since the break-up. It answers a question they have not asked and reopens what you closed.
  • Questions about who they are seeing now. It tells them you are still keeping score.
  • Anything you would not want read out to a mutual friend. Ex messages get shared.

Questions

Should I reply to my ex’s happy birthday text?

A short thank you is the gracious default: “Thanks, that’s kind. Hope you’re well.” It does not reopen anything. Skip it only if you are deliberately in no contact.

What does it mean when an ex texts “hey” after no contact?

Usually that they are thinking about you and want to see if you will answer, without committing to anything. It is low effort on purpose. If you reply, keep yours equally light and see whether they bring something real. A real question or an apology in their next message means they want more than a chat.

How should I respond to a drunk text from my ex?

Not that night. If you want to reply, do it the next day in daylight terms: “Saw your message. Hope you got home ok.” That tells them you noticed without rewarding the 2am version.

Is it rude not to reply to an ex?

Not if you need the distance. Ignoring a practical message about shared things is different and usually worth a one-line answer. For everything else, protecting your own head is a good enough reason. You can always reply later if you change your mind.
